THE POWER OF SHARING YOUR CATCH 

Rising costs, bills to pay, whanau to support – life is full of challenges. For many, the cost of food is the biggest weekly challenge.   Our goal is to inspire more people to get out hunting, feed their family, and help others in need.

Hunting is a sustainable, economic source of quality nutritious food. Hunting can not only support a single family, but a whole community.   To better understand the great work already happening in the HuntingHQ community, we asked people to share a story about who they share their catch with, and why.

Q. When you go hunting, who do you share your catch with?

So, what did we learn? 

The HuntingHQ community is supportive, generous and inspiring. A big part of why people hunt is because they get satisfaction from sharing their catch and helping people in need. 

We should all be proud to be part of this community, here are some of their stories… 

HUNTING BRINGS THE WHANAU TOGETHER 

Hunters are family orientated, they either hunt as a family, or work as a team to enable a family member to gather food to share with everyone. 

“I love to share my catch with my Dad, he is the one who got me into hunting as a young girl and is now no longer able to walk or hold a rifle, so sharing stories of the one that got away and sharing meat with the one that didn’t get away is such a huge buzz for me.” 

“My grandparents are always the 1st stop as they are the original hunter gatherers of our whanau who have passed down their knowledge through the generations. But they have now reached that age in life where physically they are unable to hunt and gather, they are always appreciative of whatever comes through their doors and just the big smiles always make it worth it.” 

“When I go hunting, I share my catch with my family! We also have friends over for a feast as well. I share it with my family because they support my hunting trip and the meat is for all of us. It also means my mum doesn’t have to buy meat from the supermarket, so it is more economical. I share it with my friends because I am proud of the hunt and what I caught.” 

“I share my catch with my big family because food prices are outrages so it always good to feed the family and any left overs, my good friends will happily take some meat, so I do like to share my meat around.” 

HUGE RESPECT FOR OUR ELDERS 

Our hunting community has huge respect for the people who went before them. Recreational hunting lives on due to experienced hunters passing on their priceless hunting knowledge.  

“My koro is top of my list because he’s unable to hunt due to old age and becoming sick. He was and is a proud hunter to this day, but due to joints, bones and mind he’s had to settle for watching YouTube on the couch. He asks where I’ve caught it from and if it’s in an area he’s hunted he tells me his stories and ways he likes to cook the certain type of meat. It brings him happiness to see his granddaughter hunting and he’s even prouder I can do it alone with my own pack of dogs. He’s my inspiration, I just wish grandparents never grew old.” 

“My husband gives his to “the old fellas”, i.e. (guys who used to hunt when they were young or were ‘raised on it’ and love it but no longer have access).” 

“My favourite people to share with would be the elders or those who can’t get out anymore. I find being able to retell the story of the hunt with them makes them reminisce the days they could get out and we often share yarns of the ones that got away.”

“I share my catch with elderly neighbours and people who cannot get out themself to hunt wild game. I do this with every deer I hunt it makes them feel good and also makes me feel good helping others.” 

FEEDING AND EDUCATION THE NEXT GENERATION 

Kids, they’re young, impressionable and hungry! Our community is taking the time to not only teach them the skills of hunting, but also to respect the land and help people in need. Inspirational stuff… 

“If we get something I share it as a whanau to teach myself how to harvest and respect our catch and to teach our children the importance of safe hunting, respect, conservation, and filling our freezers (especially important with rising costs).”

“We also share it with extended whanau and friends where we are able to help lift the burden of food costs on them and again, teaches our kids the importance of helping others and giving back.”

“Friends who are struggling to feed the kids, because no one should struggle to feed their kids.”

PROVIDING FOR THE COMMUNITY  

Hunters are out in the bush each week harvesting food with the goal of providing for the community, selfless work of one person that benefits many. 

“I’m always giving it away but it’s all worth it especially seeing there smiles on their faces when you give them kai (food) I love what I do for our people and also the community where I’m from its an honour to be a provider.…”

“The reason why we share the catch is because it’s called Whanaungatanga life skills, living off the land. We Karakia before we go if we are lucky, we come home with kai to feed the whanau. That’s the way of living. I donate my share to the homestead freezer so whoever else comes can eat it.”

“Most recently it has been with the neighbours over the back fence. A young Indian family who like a lot of us, are struggling financially. They are now massive veni fans and also do a mean tahr curry!”

GIVING PEOPLE IN NEED A HAND UP 

Everyone struggles at some point in their life. If you have the skills to provide a little extra for others, you should put it to use. Our HuntingHQ community are walking the walk… 

“I give it to food banks to give to the less fortunate in my community. I just loving hunting and share it with them just seeing them have a smile on their face makes it all worth it that’s what it’s all about giving back to my people and the community.” 

“Family friends or people in need. Lots of people are struggling at the moment so having some pork or venison goes a long way in helping them and takes a bit of pressure of them.”

“There are so many families that really appreciate the fresh meat. And nothing more satisfying than giving it to someone in need.”

“I know and a few people with special needs” 

“He occasionally gives to random families he does not really know but suspects they struggle financially.”

“I shot 125 deer so far this year and shot 171 last year, I give meat to work colleagues and put posts on my local Facebook pages giving away free venison and complete strangers come pick up meat once they’ve messaged me for address, I’d rather see it going to people that need it rather than wasting meat. The cost of living is so high now lots of people can’t afford decent meat.” 

THE STUDENT ARMY 

Students are traditionally very creative when it comes to saving a few dollars. It’s great to see them using hunting as a way to feed the flatmates and fellow hungry students. 

“I’m a Uni student so buying meat becomes very expensive. I’m glad to say in the two years at Uni so far I haven’t bought any meat. I also harvest a few for friends. Often butchering, packaging and gifting most of the meat I get to other flats around. This year I have supplied meat to about 8-10 different flats and they love having free venison for the freezer.” 

“Have been at University in Christchurch for the last four years and have loved providing for my mates so the food bill each week is a bit less. I brought a mincer at the start of the year which is getting a lot of use by myself and my mates.” 

AND THE SOME OTHER LEGENDS 

“Especially those that haven’t tried venison before so they can experience the joy of wild meat.” 

“I bow hunt and try to provide free range meat that’s taste so good and to give them the bug to try hunting.” 

“Everyone in NZ should have access to fresh tucker!!!” 

“Hunting and providing gives a sense of MANA to us all.” 

“We have to go out and harvest some of the best free-range meat in the world.” 

“Everyone deserves a taste of what New Zealand has to offer.” 

THE LAST WORD 

“Times can be tough specially with the coast of things. It’s so rewarding to be able to provide for yourself and others. It’s nice to see the smile on the faces of those who are struggling to feed their families and really appreciate the help.” 

What an amazing and generous bunch of stories! Everyone should be proud that a group of people like this exist, and are part of our hunting community. We certainly are.
